UP Art Studio launches Electrical Box “Mini Murals” Project

At May 20, 2015

With Partners and Supporter The City of Houston Mayor’s Office of Cultural Affairs, Department of Public Works and Engineering, Houston Arts Alliance, City Council Member Larry Green – District K, and Fresh Arts

Event on Saturday, June 6, 2015, 9:30 AM

May 20, 2015 — (HOUSTON) UP Art Studio is honored to present the pilot phase of the “Mini Murals” project in Houston, Texas. The idea behind this project is to convert blight into art by painting the blank canvases around the city – electrical control boxes (also known as Signal Cabinets or Utility Boxes), which can be found at every intersection that has a stoplight.

This project has the support of the City of Houston Mayor’s Office of Cultural Affairs, the City of Houston Department of Public Works & Engineering, Houston Arts Alliance, some City Council Members, some Management Districts, and Fresh Arts as its fiscal agent, making donations to the project tax-deductible.

City of Houston Council Member Larry Green was the first to participate with 31 boxes in his District K. He says, “I’m very excited that our council office is bringing civic art to District K. Moreover, I’m thrilled to work with UP Art Studio, which is the conduit for this Mini Murals project. Unfortunately, council districts outside Loop 610 don’t have the same opportunity to acquire civic art as those areas inside the Loop. This civic art project will expose these electrical boxes’ Mini Murals as a legacy initiative toward fostering civic art not only within District K neighborhoods but to the entire city.”

WHAT: “Mini-Murals” is a project that transforms ordinary traffic control cabinets, also known as utility or electrical boxes, into works of art. This is a low-cost, high visual impact project, and similar projects have been successful in municipalities across the world.

The “Mini Murals” pilot phase will kick-off with approximately 14 urban artists commissioned by UP Art Studio to paint 31 electrical boxes in Houston City Council District K. The first box of the project, which is located at Willowbend and West Bellfort, will be painted by world-class muralist and street artist Anat Ronen. This box will be unveiled by City of Houston’s Honorable Mayor Annise Parker on June 6, 2015 at 9:30 am. The pilot phase was made possible through the support of City Council Member Larry Green’s district service fund.

WHY: The project is intended to help instill civic pride, beautify streetscapes and neighborhoods, create a sense of community, promote dialogue, and enhance the character of our city.

With the pilot phase we aim to raise awareness of the project in order to expand to other areas across Houston, especially areas that are art deficient.
